Leonard Bernstein - Young People's Concerts / New York Philharmonic

Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts with the New York Philharmonic stand among his greatest achievements. These televised programs introduced an entire generation to the joys of classical music. Bernstein conducted his first Young People's Concert on January 18, 1958, just two weeks after becoming Music Director of the New York Philharmonic. Such programs were already a Philharmonic tradition when Bernstein arrived, but he made them a centerpiece of his work, part of what he described as his "educational mission." Looking back on the concerts years later, he referred to them as being "among my favorite, most highly prized activities of my life." When he took a sabbatical season from the orchestra in 1964-65, he still came back to lead the Young People's Concerts. He continued to lead these programs until 1972, even though he had stepped down as director of the Philharmonic in 1969. Bernstein led a total of fifty-three Young People's Concerts during those fourteen years, and covered a broad range of subjects. The works of the great composers were explored, including tributes to modern masters such as Dmitri Shostakovich, Paul Hindemith, Gustav Holst, Aaron Copland and Charles Ives. Bernstein discussed "Jazz in the Concert Hall," "Folk Music in the Concert Hall," and "The Latin-American Spirit." He explained the intricacies of Music Theory in programs such as "Musical Atoms: A Study of Intervals" and "What is a Mode?" He broached complex aesthetic issues such as "What Does Music Mean?" (his first program) with clarity and without condescension. Bernstein also used the Young People's Concerts to introduce young performers to the musical world. The sixteen year-old pianist André Watts made his debut in the concert of January 15, 1963. Originally broadcast on Saturday mornings, the programs were considered so important that for three glorious years CBS presented them at 7:30 p.m. (prime time for television viewing). Eventually the programs were moved to Sunday afternoons. The concerts were translated into other languages and syndicated to forty countries.

From December on, "Arthur Rubinstein The Complete Album Collection" will be the world's biggest CD edition for a solo artist according to Guinness World Records (TM). It features all the legendary pianist's issued recordings made by RCA Victor between 1940 and 1976, and includes one LP issued on the DECCA label in 1978. The collection also includes the recordings Rubinstein made in England for the English label His Master's Voice (HMV) between 1928 and 1940, most of which were released in the United States by RCA on its Victor label. The collection includes complete studio and live performances, solo, concerto and chamber music repertoire in reproductions of original LP sleeves and labels, the earlier recordings, initially released on 78-rpm discs, appear in three sets with 14 CDs in the edition.

The bonus CDs in this edition (CDs 140-142) contain recordings of his legendary 1961 cycle of ten concerts at New York's Carnegie Hall. They include four works that Rubinstein had never before committed to disc plus two others that represent brand-new additions to his RCA discography.

This edition also boasts the finest sound quality ever bestowed on Arthur Rubinstein's complete recordings. The masters for the principal works in the collection come from the series of Living Stereo SACDs and Japanese XRCDs. All the other recordings are based on masters from the Rubinstein Collection of 1999, technically and sonically refurbished for this edition. In cases where the desired results could not be obtained, Sony Classical has gone back to the original analogue tapes.

The 164-page full-colored hardcover book in landscape format includes new liner notes by Rubinstein biographer Harvey Sachs, photos shot or selected by Arthur Rubinstein's daughter Eva Rubinstein, an essay about the legendary 1961 Carnegie Hall concerts, complete discography in alphabetical and chronological order featuring 78s, 45s and LPs and track listings with complete discographical notes, producer names and matrix nos.

The two bonus DVDs are "Rubinstein Remembered", a documentary tracing the great pianist's life from his origins in Łódź, Poland, through his final concert there in 1975, with interviews from family and friends, newsreels, home movies, TV interviews and performance footage. Narrated by Rubinstein's son John Rubinstein and produced by Peter Rosen and the "The Benefit Recital for Israel 1976" recorded at Ambassador College, Pasadena, California on Jan 15, 1975 featuring works by Beethoven, Schumann, Debussy, Chopin and Mendelssohn.

The "Arthur Rubinstein Complete Album Collection" consists almost entirely of reproductions of vinyl LPs in their original sleeves. The few exceptions that were only released on CD retain their original CD cover. Thus for the first time ever, music lovers have the opportunity of discovering every single one of Rubinstein's original albums in a single issue.

I've been looking for a discount on luggage or wheeled duffle bags in preparation for my well deserved two week vacation away from work. Recently the nearest travel gear shop started offering discount luggage and wheeled duffle bags in anticipation of the coming vacation season. I'm only going on a 2 week trip so I won't have any need for a huge, bulky luggage. My options were limited to duffle bags and since I don't like to carry a heavy load all the time, I had to go with wheeled duffle bags. Out of all the discounted wheeled duffle bags on display, only one caught my attention: The Eagle Creek Centerline Load Warrior LT 30.

The Eagle Creek Centerline Load Warrior LT 30 is a wheeled duffle bag with a relatively large size for a duffle bag with its 59 inch linear size (30 inches by 17 inches by 12 inches dimension). To help with its large size, the cleverly named Load Warrior employs compression straps to hold its entire load securely.

The seemingly large off road wheels are complemented with a set of rugged footplates, providing a smooth, reliable ride over all terrains. As an added bonus, a soft touch telescoping handle makes for a versatile and adjustable handle length.

Made with the intention of being zipped from end to end, this wheeled duffle bag is very similar to a book, making for an extremely easier access and packing. It also features a convenient laundry chute pocket, accessible from the interior, intended to segregate the dirty stuff from clean ones, making it ideal for separating dirty laundry from reserved clothes. There is also a lower "boot" compartment that is ideal for storing your shoes and separating it from clean items (my shoes seem to be too large for the compartment, but I assume other people with smaller feet may find it useful for its intended purpose).

It highly efficient oversized wheels worked well when I tried it on the rutted, uneven gravel outside the store, making it easy to roll and drag the bag around, especially with its balanced frame, which meant that it won't topple over when left alone.

All in all, the Eagle Creek Centerline Load Warrior LT 30 is an ideal discount wheeled duffle bag for short, 1 to 2 week trips. Available in dark gray colors with tomato red trims and silver handles. I bought mine as a special on the store's discount luggage and wheeled duffle bags promo, but was told by the clerk that it is usually priced in the mid range. Even at that price, all the features of the Eagle Creek Centerline Load Warrior LT 30 make it a reasonable buy and well worth your money.

The "what" of management consulting, (I.e.: Generating ideas, finding solutions, and implementing those solutions inside the client's business) can't happen in a vacuum. When it comes to management consulting, the delivery process or the "how" should be what primes. Because, given a step-by-step process any business school graduate can think his way through a problem. Sadly without such a process, too often the final recommendation rarely offers a long-term solution for the client.

Therefore, I would like to propose a new basic process. This process can be used regardless of the type of project, or the industry in which consulting. This process is what the consultants at Tumiza Strategy Consulting, LLC use to ensure quality delivery and implementation of business solutions.

Here are the seven fundamental phases of this process:

Phase 1: Making First Contact/Entry

First Contact: This is the first contact with the client.

Discussion: At this phase the Business Analyst is identifying who the client is and what motivation there is to bring about change. (WILL-logical & WANT-emotional FACTORS)

Negotiation: Here the Business Analyst is exploring the potential for working together with the client. This step also includes specifying the desired outcomes (general scope), deciding who is going to do what, agreeing on style, costs, timing and accountability. It's also at this stage that an agreement is reached to move to the next phase.

Phase 2: Survey

Preliminary Analysis: The Business Analyst(s) collects the data needed from the client and analyzes it in view of improving Quality, Sales & Marketing, Operations and Administration of the corporate endeavor. The actual analysis performed normally includes a series of studies I.e.: Financial Ratio Analysis - Business Efficiency Analysis - Business Growth Analysis, etc.

Functional Findings Meeting: At this meeting the Business Analyst (or team of Business Analysts) presents the findings to the client in a report format. The report highlights the issues as encountered by analyst(s), the concerns the client may have, proposed solutions, possible improvements, and anticipated results and estimated net benefits of solution implementation, and cost of consulting services to install the improvements.

Proposal: Based on the findings, a proposal is drafted to show possible improvements, estimated net benefits to client, and cost of consulting services to install the improvements.

Phase 3: Management Consulting

Opening Meeting: At this meeting the Business Analyst introduces the client to the Management Consulting team, which normally includes a Project Director and one of more Management Consultant. During the meeting the client and consulting team ask clarifying questions to ensure full understanding of both parties' expectations and sought outcomes. The different roles of all stakeholders are delineated including the role of the Project Sponsor. Also, at the meeting both parties agree on the Functional Project Requirements and clients Key Decision Criteria are identified to ensure successful project completion - Estimated duration: 90 minutes or less.

Discovery: During the discovery process the Management Consulting team's job is to breakdown the functional findings and project requirements into a technical structure so that tasks can be allocated. This process involves an in-depth primary analysis. Estimated duration: 2 days or less.

Project Plan: The project director drafts a Project Plan that confirms the expectations of the client. The document lists all major functional activities and objectives of the project. Once agreed upon, the Project Plan becomes the blueprint used by all in the achievement of the objectives.

Phase 4: Execution

Implementation: At this stage, the client (Project Sponsor) is given assistance in specifying what it is he wants and when he wants it. The interaction between the client's employees and the Management Consulting team continues, solutions are sought and implemented. Also, at this step the work is planned in terms of who will do what, when, where, how and with what resources. The Project Plan is then carried out.

Initiation/Research: All parties involved get to know one another better. Bonding relationships are formed. The Management Consulting team continues to gather and analyze information to properly hone the project.

Execution: At this stage solutions are being implemented. Solutions may take several shapes including: trainings, standardizations, procedures, improvements, re-organizations, documentations, etc.

Phase 5: Evaluation

Evaluation: In an ongoing fashion, the client and the Management Consultant team look over the project and their relationship and make adjustments to ensure satisfaction of client based on Key Decision Criteria.

Recommendations: Regularly, throughout the project, the Management Consulting team presents its findings, recommendations and proposed execution plan to the Project Sponsor.

Status Reports: On a regular basis the Project Director drafts Status Reports and meets with the Project Sponsor to share the progress of the project and to re-align the objectives as necessary.

Phase 6: Termination

Termination: The Project Director and the Project Sponsor agree to conclude the project. The final objectives are decided and concluded in the allotted timeframe.

Closing Letter: Project Sponsor shares all comments in an official letter addressed to the executive management of Tumiza Strategy Consulting.

Closing Questionnaire: Project Sponsor fills out a closing questionnaire.

Phase 7: Revision

Progress Review: About 3-6 months after the project, the management at Tumiza contacts the client to inquire about the project installations and their effects on the business. Additional solutions may be proposed.

In summary

The world of business is becoming more intricate daily. The rapid rate of absorption of new technologies and the minimization of barriers between economies make the expansion of business easier and more affordable than ever before. Even small and medium sized businesses can now compete with the giants of past days.

The knowledge and wisdom of our management consultants cautiously reserved for the business elites of before is now made available to small and medium sized businesses as well. These smaller clients can't afford any inefficiency - their budgets can't permit it. Therefore our industry needs to improve and streamline its processes to ensure that we can serve all our clients in the most optimized way.
